aLRIGHT HEY EVERYBODYā¦
For 20 years, I felt like I was failing the same test every night with my gambling. Then I walked into a Gamblers Anonymous room on February 8, 2022 and realized the answers had been there all along.
For the next three years, those rooms became a huge part of my life. But eventually I started looking around and wondering: Where is everybody?
Why am I one of the youngest people in the room by 30 years? (and I'm not that young) Where are the women? Where are the young people?
Gambling was expanding and exploding. It was on every TV screen and finding its way into all of our algorithms. But the rooms weren't filling up with all of the people I knew had to be struggling.
That's when I knew we needed to find a way to share the answers.
Welcome to The Modern Meeting.
The Podcast
Launched in November 2024, The Modern Meeting is a podcast centered on gambling addiction, recovery, and the people whose lives and work have been shaped by it.
Each episode creates space for people to tell their stories in their own words, from people in recovery and affected loved ones to clinicians, advocates, researchers, and others working in the field.
The conversations explore not only addiction itself, but the experiences, relationships, consequences, recovery, and growth that surround it.
Gambling is our North Star, but the door is open to anyone affected by addiction because so much of the experience is shared.
FEATURED EPISODES
The Modern Meeting isn't just something you watch or listen to. It's a community you can be part of.
Our free virtual meetings bring together people affected by addiction for honest conversation, shared experience, and connection. We don't promote one path to recovery, and you don't need to fit a particular label to belong here.
Two meetings. Two very different experiences.
meetings
The Modern Meeting Meeting
Mondays ⢠8 PM ET ⢠Zoom
Every Monday night, people from around the world get together on Zoom to talk honestly about addiction, recovery, and whatever they're facing in their lives.
There's a different topic each week, but where the conversation goes depends on the people in the room. Some people share what they're going through. Others respond with their own experiences, offer support, or simply listen.
Everyone is welcome. People in recovery, people still struggling, affected loved ones, and people who work in the addiction and recovery space all have a place in the conversation. You don't have to belong to a particular recovery program, have a certain amount of time away from your addiction, or even know exactly what you're looking for yet.
The point is to get people talking, listening, and finding connection through shared experience.
not your first Meeting Meeting
Saturdays ⢠10 AM ET ⢠Zoom
This isn't a meeting where you sit back and listen. It's a 60-minute facilitated conversation built for people who already know what a recovery meeting feels like and want to go deeper.
Each week is built around one topic, and the facilitator guides the conversation from beginning to end. Expect direct questions, follow-up questions, different perspectives, respectful pushback, and sometimes a little discomfort. The goal isn't to get through a series of individual shares. It's to actually have a conversation and dig into the things we don't always get the chance to talk about in traditional recovery meetings.
Everyone participates. That means cameras on, microphones off mute, showing up on time, and staying for the full 60 minutes. This meeting asks something from everyone in the room.
Think of it as a group episode of the podcast that never sees the light of day.
speaking
Twenty years inside gambling addiction. Now telling the story from the other side.
Adam Lyons is a nationally recognized speaker on gambling addiction and recovery, bringing 20 years of lived experience together with years spent working, interviewing, facilitating, and speaking throughout the gambling harm and recovery field. His presentations have been delivered to conferences, councils, clinicians, recovery professionals, advocates, and policymakers, including a 2026 Congressional Briefing in Washington, D.C.
FEAUTURED PRESENTATION
On October 4, 2020, at the height of his gambling addiction, Adam recorded a video of himself during a night of gambling in Las Vegas. He never expected anyone else to see it.
Years later, that recording became the centerpiece of Addiction Time Capsule, a presentation that takes audiences inside the reality of active gambling addiction and then revisits that night through the perspective of recovery.
BEYOND ADDICTION TIME CAPSULEā¦
Adam speaks on gambling addiction, recovery, lived experience, the changing gambling landscape, and the role of connection in recovery. Presentations can be tailored for conferences, professional audiences, recovery organizations, colleges, and community events.
